Young Stars Shine Bright at Mertz Middle Theater Night

Students at Mertz Middle School lit up the auditorium stage Thursday evening as they performed their original play, Journey Beyond the Stars, before a packed audience of proud families and community members. The cheerful performance marked the grand finale of the school district's new spring drama and literacy initiative.

Under bright spotlights and shimmering foil moons, young actors took their final bows to roaring applause from the crowd. Third grader Leo Ramirez, wearing a velvet cape and crown, beamed alongside classmates Maya Chen, Sam Miller, and Ella Jackson. The stage burst with colorful handmade sets, soft paper clouds, and golden curtains crafted by parent volunteers during weekend workshops.

"This program gives every child a voice and a chance to shine regardless of their background," said Mertz Middle drama teacher Sarah Jenkins. "We saw quiet students blossom into confident speakers on stage tonight, and seeing so many families come together to support their children shows how strong our school community truly is."

Applewood School District board member Marcus Vance also attended the performance and praised the young performers for their dedication. "Watching these talented students bring their story to life reminds us why investing in arts education is so vital," Vance said. "The joy in this room tonight reflects the growth, creativity, and unity happening across all fourteen of our schools."

As the applause faded, families gathered in the hallway to celebrate with sweet treats, hugs, and high fives. The district plans to expand the elementary theater program to additional schools next fall, ensuring more students can discover the magic of the stage.
