Guidance during inclement weather or related emergencies
3:00-5:00 AM: VSD checks weather forecasts, observes road conditions, and communicates with county road crews and neighboring districts.
Administrators monitor weather forecasts, temperatures and road conditions hourly during adverse weather to determine if conditions are safe for transporting students to school. Based on multiple factors, the Superintendent and Transportation Supervisor may opt for a 2-hour late start or cancel school for the day.
VSD communicates using phone calls, text messages, email messages, school Facebook posts, notices on the VSD website and Parent App, and through local news stations (KREM-2, KXLY-4, KHQ-6).
We encourage families to stay informed during bad weather. Be aware that neighboring district schedules may affect your student's bus times.
5:15-6:00 AM: School schedule decisions are made. Superintendent communicates changes to District Leadership Team and notifications begin.
6:00-6:30 AM: VSD notifies all staff, families, and local news stations about school delays or closures.
VSD intends to communicate school closures by 6:30 a.m.; however, worsening weather may prompt a closure announcement between 6:30-8:30 a.m.
School closure days will be made up later in the school year.
Note: In all 2-hour delays or closures, the VELC Director will notify families about childcare service availability.
